New Hoots & Hellmouth

July 1st, 2009

Here is another new track from Hoots & Hellmouth’s latest release The Holy Open Secret. This may be one of my favorite tracks from the band - ever! There is a very unrestrained and loose feel to it, almost like it you are listening to it live. And you know how fun the band is live! The Holy Open Secret was out on June 2nd, and the band’s next stop in Philly (or Camden, I suppose) is at the XPoNential Music Festival on July 25th.

Here is a good Wednesday night line-up at Kungfu Necktie - one of my favorites from DC, MIddle Distance Runner, and local favorites Drink Up Buttercup. You can download ‘The Sun and Earth’ from MIddle Distance Runner’s newest release below. I know I’ve posted it before, but it’s a good one.

Tonight : The XYZ Affair

June 26th, 2009

The XYZ Affair are in town tonight and back in May they released, well, 2 Summer Jams. Aptly named, especially upon listening to the tracks. And the two ‘jams’ are both up for free download. The band puts on a really fun live show - dance moves, barber-shop-quartet-type vocals, that sort of thing. They open up for Wheat tonight at Kungfu Necktie. You can also download Wheat’s newest single, below. Their new album White Ink, Black Ink is due out July 21.

Friday, 26 June

Elizabeth and the Catapult

Elizabeth and the Catapult caught my attention with their whimsical debut single ‘Taller Children.’ They’ll be at the Tin Angel tomorrow (Saturday) night, so now seems an appropriate time to share, if you haven’t heard this one yet. The trio’s singer and songwriter, Elizabeth (as you probably deduced), says this song is for adults who haven’t quite figured out how to grow up and how overwhelming it can be. Maybe it is not as whimsical as I initially thought? This song is the title track from the debut album, released on June 9th. Many out there compare her to Regina Spektor or Feist. I have to agree that she sits comfortably among them. Have a listen.

New FREE Sun Airway EP

June 25th, 2009

You can download Sun Airway’s new EP Oh, Naoko in its entirety for free over at their website. Sun Airway is Jon Barthmus and Patrick Marsceill, both formerly of The A-Sides.  Definitely more electronic influenced, but still fun.  Don’t miss out this.

Patrick Wolf Remix

June 23rd, 2009

Anyone catch Patrick Wolf on Saturday at the North Star (whoops, I meant to get this song posted up last week)? Here is a remix of ‘Who Will,’ taken from his fourth release The Bachelor, out back on June 2nd. I’m absolutely loving this remix, though I tend to like most anything he does, eccentric as he may be.

Major Lazer

June 18th, 2009

Major Lazer has been everywhere this week, from the airwaves to pretty much every blog ever. But the group’s ties to Philadelphia make this a piece of local interest. Major Lazor is Philly’s Diplo and British DJ Switch, and the album Gun’s Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do debuted on Tuesday. They’ve got TWO FREE performances lined up in Philly on Friday. You can catch an in-store performance at the Broad and Chestnut FYE at 6pm, or later that night over at the Electric Factory. Download a remix of the track ‘Hold the Line,’ below, which features another Philly local - Santigold.
